Scholarship Provides Study Abroad Experience

SPY sunglass company has provided funding for a scholarship to provide San Diego State students life-changing study abroad experiences.

Offered to students in the L. Robert Payne School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, the scholarship guarantees as many as 10 students access to international study opportunity each year via the Center for Surf Research.

Preserving the environment

“We’re proud to support SDSU students in their endeavors toward developing sound surf tourism management practices,” said Mark Marovich, SPY's eCommerce director. “As surfers, it’s essential that we preserve the environment around us locally and abroad — a value that SPY and those at the Center for Surf Research look to perpetuate.”

As surfers expand their travels to new and developing locations, they pave the way for larger scale tourism industries that can create a legacy of soiled destinations, disheartened and distressed communities, and missed opportunities to replace poverty with maintainable livelihoods.

The Center for Surf Research engages surf industry leaders and surf tourism destinations to create a cutting edge research agenda and provide professional and scholarly advice on the sustainable use of resources and the conservation of critical environments.

Experience of a lifetime

Carl Kish, a 2012 graduate of the Recreation and Tourism Management program, participated in a Center for Surf Research study abroad experience in Costa Rica, where he gained hands on experience at the Casa Tucan surf hotel and Safari Surf School.

He is a prime example of the type of student the scholarship will support.

“This has been the experience of a lifetime,” Kish said. “I now realize that sustainable surf tourism is possible, and I know how to do it.”

As the first center of its kind in the world, a key component of accomplishing the goals for the Center for Surf Research is to provide study abroad experiences for students.

Created as a non-profit research and teaching center at SDSU, the center presents a unique balance between classroom lessons and hands-on, real-world experiences for its students.

“The center has used zero state funds to date; we are driven by passion and philanthropic support. This partnership with SPY will facilitate study abroad programs that we know significantly impact the lives of our students,” said the center’s director, Jess Ponting.
